What is blended cement?
Traditional portland cement is not the only cementitious option used in modern concrete. Blended cements combine portland cement clinker with materials such as finely ground limestone, slag, or pozzolans. The exact combination affects fresh-concrete behavior, strength development, durability, appearance, and environmental impact.
The American Cement Association reported that approximately 65 million metric tons of blended cement were consumed in the United States during 2025, compared with about 35 million metric tons of traditional portland cement. That makes blended cement an established part of today’s market rather than a fringe experiment.
Lower carbon should not mean lower expectations
A responsible sustainability discussion considers more than emissions at manufacturing. It also considers service life, maintenance, resilience, transportation, mixture performance, and whether the finished project avoids premature replacement.
Common blended-cement families
- Type IL: portland-limestone cement containing a controlled percentage of finely ground limestone.
- Type IS: portland blast-furnace slag cement.
- Type IP: portland-pozzolan cement.
- Type IT: ternary blended cement using two complementary constituents with portland cement.

- How does the proposed mixture address weather and exposure?
- Will the mixture affect finishing, curing, color, or scheduling?
- Is environmental documentation such as an EPD available?
- How is durability being considered alongside embodied carbon?
What is an EPD?
An Environmental Product Declaration presents independently structured environmental information about a product using established calculation and reporting rules. It can help design and commercial teams compare documented impacts, but it is not by itself a guarantee that a mixture is right for a particular project.
What this means for residential work
Homeowners do not need to become concrete technologists. They should expect their contractor and supplier to match the concrete to the application, local exposure, finish, access, and schedule. The most responsible project is one designed and installed to perform well for a long time.
